Let me begin by saying that I am sorry for having sent a bad bug report- it did not have all the information about the steps that I had followed. A waste of your time. Also I am not a member of this list so would you please reply to me directly.
I would like to insist on this installation problem that I have- I have been given a PC with red hat installed in it and have to install our programs that use mysql. We have added some functionality so we do need the source code.

Now this is where I would find the data files had I done an RPM installation. I find this strange because I did the same installation, from source, on tuesday on a SUSE linux machine and had no problems at all. Or is /var/bin/mysql the place where data files are supposed to be in a redhat linux installation?
Fix:
Beside Tim's question, I have one more. Did you download our RPM from our site ??
Also, on an unrelated issue, did you change user= under which mysql runs, as privileges are not set for user mysql in your datadir.
