For those who are waiting around for sophisticated visualization tools you can use with your proprietary sources, check out MIT's Simile Project. All Javascript - you point their methods to your data: http://simile.mit.edu/

For example, their timeplot API:

and their timeline API:

http://simile.mit.edu/timeline/

...are both really sophisticated and easy to set up. This is not a knock on Google - just a suggested stop-gap for devels who are stuck.
