It could also be an encoding-view or charset-used.

-2 chars or "?"
Maybe if you try these:
1. In your browser (IE, FIrefox), Go to Menu, find encoding (in View or
similar) and change to UTF-8 or your local encoding
2. Edit config.php in your eventum /config directory, change default
APP_CHARSET to your local charset.

Umlauts show up fine here. So I guess it must be a database setup issue.
