I'm still unclear on whether this ( subfolders of shared folders ) is a supported feature or not. Can I do this? If so, how?

Yes. You want virtual accounts and virtual shared folders.

See README.maildirfolders for more information.

I just read a little on virtual accounts. Being able to store stuff in a mysql database is quite attractive for us. This is starting to sound like a larger job than I had in mind though :)

We're obviously using the filesystem-based storage at the moment. We're using courier-imap just to store email in folders. We've got a CanIt-enhanced sendmail smtp server. We also make use of vacation for when people go on holiday, and procmail to sort mail into folders ( just for me ).

Is all this possible with virtual accounts? Does sendmail support this type of setup? It's been quite a while since I touched my sendmail config files, and to be honest, it's not my favourite pasttime ...

You're handy with scripting, so you shouldn't have any problem putting together the scripts to generate the necessary index files.

We'll see :)
