Hi Bertrand,

It looks like this issue is well understood and I have no concerns that the incubating community will take appropriate steps during incubation to resolve any remaining issues regarding the name.

The proposal says "Existing Flex-related conferences, podcasts and websites should be allowed to continue using “Flex” as part of their name - Apache Flex will have to create guidelines for that."

...A quick search of the internet shows these potential conflicts as well:

flex.org run by Adobe Platform Evangelism Team; will this site die or will Apache be expected to maintain it with volunteers?...

I have no idea, but if it continues to exist and points to Apache Flex I have no problem with that.

Fun - same name for something totally different. IMO this deserves a "there are other FLEXs out there" page on the Apache Flex website. No big deal.

flex.at © 2008 Flex. All rights reserved. Site by instant>>>>

Hard to say what that is from their frontpage...tv or radio show? Not confusing IMO.

flex.com ISP in Hawaii

An ISP. Not confusing.

openshift.redhat.com/app/flex

The full name is "Openshift Flex", which clears the confusion with "Apache Flex". Like when someone asks "which Craig are you talking about"?

This list shows that "Flex" is a fairly generic adjective/qualifier/ something.

This hasn't been a problem for Adobe so far - everybody who should know knows what "Adobe Flex" is, I imagine the same will continue once it's "Apache Flex".

...I'd really like to have trademarks and legal take a closer look at this... We know what a nightmare name conflicts are, even when the name in question is as well-known and well-understood as this one....

I don't think this is needed now.

As I wrote a few minutes ago in this thread, Flex is *entering* the incubator with this name. There's plenty of time during incubation to verify that the name works, and if not it can be changed.
