It depends on your definition of "expensive." All of our servers are fairly "commodity." The new linux fileserver I built at home is faster than most of ours, and it cost me less that $1k. It's all the "management/redundancy" stuff that makes "real servers" so expensive. I dual dual-core opteron with 8GB RAM is not all that "exotic."
