The best information we have right now is that devices will be available in the second half of 2008, and that's the only date that has been announced. We would obviously love to be able to tell you guys when to expect devices to become available, but that's as accurate as we can be. As Stone Mirror points out, shipping a device is a complex task.
We also don't yet know exactly when the software will be open sourced. There are a lot of variables in that equation (not least of which is that the Alliance contains 30+ members), and the best we can say is that the source code will be available in 2008. I realize that a full year is quite a broad spread, but coordinating the release of an entire modern operating system is a very large task, indeed.
The article that Stone Mirror cited says things like "late 2008" and "the source itself won't be released until [...] the first Android phones go on sale", but I don't know where they got that information. Neither of those statements is official or accurate according to our current information. (It's probably worth noting that those are not direct quotes attributed to Dave Burke, so some amount of interpretation has occurred, and sometimes mistakes happen.)

6 months in fact
According to whom? Dave Burke, a Google engineering manager on Android, said in London last week that source would not be opened before devices came out "in late 2008": see http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.php/id;258714364.
It's late 2007, and six months from now will be _early_ 2008, so I'd love to see some support for your statement of "fact"...
Having had some experience in the consumer electronics field, I can tell you that the likelihood of bringing out a complex hardware/software project on time, when you're attempting to predict that time a year in advance is very, very small. The likelihood of it coming in _ahead_ of schedule is pretty much nil.
