Courier uses its own resolver.
Try the lookup with the $PREFIX/bin/testmxlookup utility,
and/or use the IP instead of the hostname in etc/esmtproutes.
Courier sometimes also handles MX's a bit a unusual if all
of them have the same priority, but this does not apply to
your particular setup with a fixed smarthost:
