The third major hurdle will be the migration plan -- how to cut over to the new system, whether to port over old reports from NNTP, and what to do about stragglers that still send reports the old way.

That isn't as difficult as you might think. The key becomes a combination of the ID and the submission type. So the SMTP submitted reports have a SMTP type with the NNTP id, and the HTTP submitted reports have a HTTP type with a fresh ID. For legacy, no type assumes SMTP.

So I don't think the challenge is really a TPF-supported coder -- I think we need a small group of knowledgeable people to set aside time to hammer out a design and pressure-test it.

Agreed. Having one person with a grant will still need the support of all us to get the job done. The current core developers already have unique perspectives so we hopefully think of everything, so a good brainstorm is likely to be of more value.

Would the QA HAckathon that Birmingham.pm are doing next year be too far away? Or perhaps we can use that as chance to bring the final pieces together and iron out any integration and migration plans.
