Unfortunately, given the nature of the man, nobody has ANY IDEA where he is on this. The impression I had got was that he was diverted from qmail 2 by his frustration with DNS, but now that djbdns is reasonably stable and complete, what's next?

I suspect that rather than update qmail, he'll try his hand at revamping internet e-mail completely with "Internet Mail 2000" (http://cr.yp.to/im2000.html), but like you say, nobody knows but Dan, and he isn't talking.
