To my knowledge, JRE shouldn't have anything to do with JS files, whether that button is checked or not. Although Javascript was originally based on the Java platform, the two have really evolved into separate entities so that they are now more like ham and hamburger than anything else. Are there similarities? Yes, but they really are distinct. The AJAX API, then, does not utilize any sort of Java applet, so JRE should never enter the equation. Here's what I would do:
1. Install a copy of Mozilla Firefox and see if the sample works there. 2. If Firefox works, start going through the IE settings. Make sure that you are allowed to run scripts on page and that you can download and run scripts from Google. Toggle any browser add-ins you may have installed (e.g., toolbars, etc.), testing the page after you fiddle with each one. 3. If Firefox doesn't work, it could be a global system or even network issue. Make sure your software and/or hardware firewalls are set to allow Javascript downloads from Google
Your screenshots verify that you are running exactly the same version of IE7 that I am, and mine works, both with and without JRE installed.
