Google Transit is a great idea. I have a suggestion to make it even better and make public transit more accessible.
Could Google Transit combine with Google SMS to create a 'text 4
times' system (e.g.
www.devon.gov.uk/index/transport/public_transport/buses/services-4/text_messaging_service.htm)
where schedule information is make available by text messaging? If
each stop were labelled with a stop ID, then a person waiting at the
stop could send the stop ID to the text message service and receive in
return the next five buses expected at the stop. Sending the bus line
would return the remaining schedule for that bus for the day. Riders
could access this information without a computer from anywhere at
anytime
Why would this be an accessibility feature and not just one of convenience? Most bus schedules are printed in small fonts to make them more compact. As a legally blind bus rider, I find this very frustrating. With the right cell phone, text messages are much easier to read (and more convenient to carry).
