I'd love to learn more about the actual problem I encountered. What exactly did I clear?

See the man page for courier... You removed the user from the "backscatter blacklist". If courier accepts a message for a user, and then can not deliver the message, it stops accepting mail for that user, since the mail would bounce anyway. You haven't necessarily fixed the problem by clearing that blacklist entry. The message that couldn't be delivered is probably still in your queue, and when courier tries to deliver it again, the user will probably end up back in the blacklist.

I am guessing the mail queue for my user. What happened to the messages in it?

The queue isn't affected.

Why did it get backed up in the first place? (The last message I successfully received came about 40 hours ago.)

Check the logs, and look for messages that weren't successfully delivered.
