Check your cd drive is set to master and your bios is set to detect ide devices,
Also while you are there check how many ide channels you have(perhaps 2 with 2 primary and 2 secondary). If you have 2 channels perhaps you could put the drive onto the primary.

The plot thickens some more. I managed to get at the BIOS and the drive is not recognised there. I checked most carefully to make sure that the cable was properly seated and it seemed OK. Bearing in mind that it is on the same cable as the CD drive could it be because I set the jumper to slave or is it something more sinister. I think I will leave it for tonight and start again in the morning.
