Does any-one know why one couldn't use a ws-c6509-neb instead of a cisco7609..
they take the same cards, fans, supervisors etc.. Is there something I'm
missing??? or am I getting dragged into some cunning marketing ploy???.

You can, with Sup2. We did, at my previous employer (6509 NEBS chassis, SUp2/MSFC2/PFC2, 4-port GE OSM -> a functioning MPLS capable router).

However, with Sup720 you need to upgrade (new fan trays etc) - I believe I have seen reports of mixed luck with that upgrade.
