Newest version of courier, I telnet it -- connection is closed when I try to authenticate -- as previously posted by others on the list

If I try to authenticate on the server via commandline itself, it fails

I'd like to figure out what is making this fail -- but there are no logs. Is there anything I can do to force courier to log (other than set debug_level = 2 in imapd, as already done)?

I'm kind of at a loss -- there seems to be no mechanism here for me to troubleshoot with.
