Norton Anti-virus and maybe others do this. They redirect the login to their scanning daemon and it in turns downloads the mail from the server and scans it before passing it to your mail client. But as far I know it only works for POP accounts, not IMAP. Go into your anti-virus software and turn off "Incoming Email Checking". Of course, then you really need to have anti-virus email scanning on the server if you're not going to be running it on your workstation.
