Subject:Can't connect to MYSQL Server

I installed MySQL along with Apache Server on my desktop, Win2K Pro with no problems. Then I installed it on my laptop, WinXP Home, and continue to get "Error 2003: Can't connect to MySQL Server on 'localhost' (10061)" whenever I try to connect. I have seen the same problem from many people and have tried all the solutions I have seen with no improvement.

I do have a NIC card and have no problem connecting to my network.

1. I cannot telnet to localhost either, so I expect the problem lies with configuration/privileges, not with MySQL.

2. Is it possible that it cannot be done with WinXP Home? Is WinXP Pro required?

3. Can someone provide a comprehensive checklist for resolving this issue, since it seems so common?
