| Would somebody from the Perforce group please respond to this issue on this | list? This matter keeps coming up over and over.
Case sensitivity is a compile time option for the Perforce server, but it does rely on the semantics of the underlying filesystem for the file archive. That is, you couldn't possibly have a case sensitive server on NT because the NTFS would confuse "makefile,v" and "Makefile,v" in the server's depot tree.
On UNIX we routinely build and test case-insensitive servers, but don't release them. Why not? Because switching between a case-sensitive database and a case-insensitive one is really hairy, and users who attempt to do so will first shoot themselves in the foot and then turn their guns on our support crew. Such a feature violates the Hippocratic oath (features shall "do no harm").
If we can find a way to prevent people from mangling their database when they accidentally switch case-sensitivity on and off, we'll make it a run time option for the server.
Christopher
