Genius! This had been driving me mad for weeks. I've not tested it yet, but it makes 100% sense. I was using ejabberd on Ubuntu and was able to talk to and receive messages from all other XMPP/Jabber servers. I was able to send messages TO Google Talk accounts, but I was getting 503 errors when trying to reply through GAIM. The interface in GMail was also showing my Jabber account as offline, but was receiving messages. Fingers crossed that it will all be OK when I get home and check it.

I'd totally forgotten about my Google Apps for your Domain (couldn't even remember the username & password!) but eventually got in and disabled everything. That'll teach me to play with hosted services - much safer to have full control yourself.

Thanks again.
