I'd be surprised if courier was limited in this way. I use qmail set up with SMTP authentication and it's smart enough to know not to challange mail coming in to my domain while still requiring authentication for all mail leaving my domain. I believe it is the rcpthosts control file that tells qmail when to require a username and password and when not to. If courier is as good as people say it is, I would expect it to have similar functionality. And no flames please, I use courier IMAP and am quite happy with it.

A standard courier installation does not relay, so you don't need to enable SMTP authentication to prevent relaying. And if you do enable SMTP authentication, then do NOT REQUIRE it. When you REQUIRE authentication, you are telling every SMTP client connecting to your courier to authenticate itself. It's like asking every visitor to a public park for a password which of course they are not going to know.
