After some research it seems the javascript api is something that
works in a chrome window/browser only. Too bad, but I kind of expected
this :)

This of course sounds interesting to me, I look forward to trying it
out. The guide talks a lot about how to embed this on a website, but
not how to use it in client applications. Given the developer-key
mechanism you use, is this even possible? What about licensing? Would
I be allowed to include the JS library in my product?

Today is a big day for GData - and even bigger for Google Calendar
developers. Gone are the days of only reading public calendar data
via JSON feeds. The new GData client library supports read/write
access to public and private calendars, with a convenient data model
to boot. For me details on the release, see the announcement on the
Google Data

As always, this forum is a great place to discuss the new library and
we can help each other build great calendar mashups.
