The ways in which these proposals differ is in subtle ways. In fact, I'll bet that many java developers would be surprised to learn what "protected" really means in Java.

Are you going to tell us? :)

As evidence that the actual rules are too complicated, neither I, nor Per, nor Robert got them all right without looking in the JLS. And we're reasonably experienced Java programmers :)
