As you noted, that is an argument from near 10 years ago.

(1) HTML templates, containing tags for strings (2) Language files, mapping tags to strings in that language (3) Style sheets [referred to from the HTML templates]

That would be simply excellent. If I could add something..

(4) A single header and footer template for all pages

I'd love to apply some AJAX to sqwebmail but, for me, it's just "all too hard" to mess with the templates when so much of the HTML is generated within C code.
