I had the impression Courier is also "A normal MTA". (Actually, I had the impression it was better than normal, but, well, my opinion is just mine).

While Courier is a "normal" MTA, using it stand-alone without the imap/pop part is not very common and so there's less support for it (comparing to postfix, exim and sendmail) in other products, including third party filters, APIs, libraries etc. If you like Courier that much, you may as well make it work with dbmail and share the code/setup instructions ;)
