What does SAMBA and MS Networking have to do with connecting to a MySQL db over ODBC? ? ?

I've connected to a DB using 95, 98, NT, 2K, Me, Linux, and BSD with no problem. Samba has nothing to do with TCP/IP and MySQL authentication via IP. Does it?
