Hi! I have the same problem trying to get the Webmasters tool right.
Even if try with a different method of verification (to upload a file) it can´t verify because of different error codes coming from the server - "We've detected that your 404 (file not found) error page returns a status of 200 (Success) in the header." (message from the webmaster tool).
it would be nice also for the basic purposes to have the "meta" tag inside the head section.

Yes, exactly. I've seen this. That's also the reason, why Google Webmaster Tools is not able to recognize themeta-tag since it is not present in the head section. Thanks for filing my request.
