If re-architecting Groovy's MOP will allow it to attain ~half of Java's speed, then fine, that's great, go there.
I believe that, excluding raw numeric performance for which primitives are necessary, Groovy and other JVM dynlangs can approach Java speed with appropriate designs. We just need a bit more work to get there.
