Ok so I have now failed to compile courier on 3 seperate boxes, and am starting to get a little frustrated and feel a little silly. So I'm going to go back to basic and start again. Hope you guys don't mind me asking really newbie type questions .. but one I'm done I wil put together a newbies guide to installing courier and post it.

1. I started out reading the install guide in the Postfix book writen by Richard Blim. It has some great expinations and seemed like a good place to start.

2. I read the INSTALL file that came with the source.

So here goes:

Q1. The Postfix book by Rickard Blumm, suggests that one does no use the standars /usr/local/src directory to install the code, as it needs to be compiled as a user. The one thing it fails to do is explain or suggest an alternate location to install the software. Where do most people extract the source to, and run the ./configure script from.

I added a user called courier-imap, extracted the source in the /home/courier-imap directory which then created courier-imap-1.7.0/ .. and this is where I ran the ./configure script from. Is this correct, and could this be the cause of some of my confusion.

Thanks Warrick
