If you can, I'd upgrade to Connector/J 3.1.5 (.6 to be released soon), and the latest stable release of MySQL-4.1.x if you want to reliably use SQLStates.
Just looked at our code closer, it will map correctly in Connector/J 3.1.x with MySQL-4.0.x server as well. I've backported the changes to Connector/J 3.0.17, but they'll be disabled by default (in 3.1, we use SQL99 state codes correctly mapped by default, as that's how the server presents them as well).
