I sent a mail to a list on my CourierMLM server about 3 days ago. It distributed the mail, and I noted lists of addresses being kept in the 'bounces' directory under the home directory of the list. Since I understand that the MLM has some automated processing for bounces, I left it all well alone.
This morning I have suddenly received about 60 messages which have these headers:
-------- From: "Courier mail server at perimeter.co.za" <@> To: post...@perimeter.co.za
--------
and in the message it tells me:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
---
UNDELIVERABLE MAIL
Your message to the following recipients cannot be delivered:
<WellnessHealthLetter-bounce1-JJGPJCEKGFFBGAOPLGKLMLGPMIDJKOKE@perimeter .co.za>: <<< Invalid address.
...
I could be mistaken here, but it looks to me like Courier is failing to deliver the "-bounce1-${ID}" messages correctly to MLM for processing.
Can any point out my mistake, or perhaps just explain to me what is happening if this is actually correct.
For what it's worth, I notice this same thing with all mailing lists, and have also wondered whether or not it is normal. Here is some relevant information for a list called 'news' for the domain 'pjonesmusic.com':
root@atlantis$ grep ne...@pjonesmusic.com /pkg/courier/etc/userdb ne...@pjonesmusic.com uid=20003|gid=20003|home=/net/pjonesmusic.com/home/news root@atlantis$ cd /net/pjonesmusic.com/home/news/ root@atlantis$ ls -a . help.tmpl sublist .. hourly.lock sublist.lock .courier idxheader2html.tmpl subreportfooter.tmpl .courier-default idxheaderhtml.tmpl subreporthdr.tmpl .courier-owner idxheadertxt.tmpl subreporthdr1.tmpl .passwd idxsubject.tmpl subreporthdr2.tmpl adminrequest.tmpl modqueue subreporthdr3.tmpl archive modrejbody.tmpl tmp bounces modreject.tmpl tmp.lock bounces.dat modrejheader.tmpl unsub.tmpl bounces.lock modsubject.tmpl unsub2.tmpl commands modtext.tmpl unsub3.tmpl commands.lock modtext2.tmpl unsublist confsubj.tmpl options warn1headers.tmpl daily.lock sub.tmpl warn1text.tmpl digestsubj.tmpl sub2.tmpl warn1text2.tmpl fetch.tmpl sub3.tmpl warn2msg.tmpl fetchsubj.tmpl sub4.tmpl headeradd sub5.tmpl root@atlantis$ cat .courier | /bin/couriermlm msg /net/pjonesmusic.com/home/news root@atlantis$ cat .courier-default | /bin/couriermlm ctlmsg /net/pjonesmusic.com/home/news
I had assumed that the lists were set up correctly, and that the bounce notices to the postmaster were normal. Are other people not seeing this? If not, are you sure that you're getting bounces in the first place?
m.
