There's a difference between "everyday things" and technical professionals talking to each others about a specific problem area - where using the wrong term is just *wrong*.

Of course these people out there call everything a "DSL modem" nowadays, but does that mean we should be sloppy in a very targeted discussion about ethernet things? I say "no".
