INSTALL. Also: try reading the comments in the file.

It was my understanding that the authentication would be done via auth_imap and not by courier-imap if I put this executable in:

/usr/lib/courier-imap/libexec/authlib/auth_imap

and updated the following file as follows: /usr/lib/courier-imap/etc/imapd AUTHMODULES="auth_imap"

Is this true?

I have no idea. auth_imap is not a part of Courier-IMAP, and I have no documentation for it.
