1. What does "some period of time" mean? I assume this is relative to how active my mail server is, but I'd like to get a general idea... if even in terms of number of messages processed.

As long as it needs to be until most of the mail sitting in mailboxes has been delivered by maildrop.

Your answer implies that as long as the maildirsize files are not being generated, that that is what is meant by "not activated", no?

What are the consequences of unleashing quota functionality on a system with mail in the maildirs that was not delivered by maildrop?

Will time heal the inefficiencies of doing something like that?
