You know, without kidding, Maven 2 with its modularity and excellent GMaven Groovy plugin is a compelling choice. We've always wanted to modularize Groovy and Maven 2 would be good at helping us in this regard.
As would Gradle. Any argument for Maven is an argument for Gradle :-)
I've looked briefly at Gradle, wasn't really impressed enough to go change all my builds from Maven 2 over to it. It still looks interesting... don't get me wrong, maybe I'm just lazy?
In a Maven vs Gradle war you have:
-- Maven is well established, but it has problems. -- Gradle recognizes many of the problems of Maven and fixes them.
What problems are those exactly and how does Gradle _fix_ them?
-- XML is a notation for use by consenting computers only. -- The rise of SCons, Rake, Rant, Gant, Gradle show that XML is the past in build technology and the use of a dynamic programming language is the future. -- Groovy should eat its own dog food. -- Change is as good as a rest. -- Why fix what ain't broken. -- The world always looks better through rose tinted spectacles. -- The current Groovy build is becoming to overcomplex to understand and it has redundant bits that no-one dares touch in case it breaks something -- a sure sign of the need for a rewrite.
I certainly agree with this statement.
-- People do far too much argument based on prejudice and waffle and not enough on hard (or even soft) data.
An important item you missed in your list:
Maven has a plethora of existing production-quality plugins to do just about anything a build requires.
* * *
IMO, Gradle is probably too young to be considered for an enterprise build tool.
Can you please explain more about the problems, as mentioned above?
Thanks,
--jason
