I'm not necessarily trying to terminate any MPLS VPNs on the 6500...just get it to do tag-switching so that ideally it could be a P router in our network core. Is even that not happening with Sup2 without OSMs?

No, even that's not supported without OSMs, when using Sup2.

I wanted 3BXL's, but the $ just wasn't there.

Hmm, the Sup720-3B is 28 k$. The Sup2 is 22 k$ plus a switch fabric (11 k$) if you want more than 16 Gbps.
