You're right, the concept is great, and this is why everyone is doing this since about 6 or 7 years. Classful addressing is a concept from the last millenium.
Actually most people don't bother calling it "VLSM" or "CIDR" or anything else anymore, but just use it as the most natural way of doing things, as soon as you have stopped thinking in classful boundaries.
