I've gotten past the error I was receiving by enabling debug and seeing the sql query errors. I had copied and pasted the sql code from the example into authmysqlrc so I'm pointing out the problem here. Perhaps somebody else will have this same problem.. The initial debug error was that there was a lose ' .' (period) in the query. I examined the file but could not find this wayward '.' I eventually found that there was an embed tab (I guess - it wasn't visible) in the line:

you should also think of usig "authtest". This should have detected such errors.
