BTW, thanks for response and for all the work that must have gone into maildrop/courier!

On this RHAS3 test/semi-production rig it's rock stable, running with Openldap 2.2.18. Maildrop maildrop-1.7.0.20041104 installed Nov 6, courier-authlib-0.50.20041103 installed Nov 4.
