hi!

i'm trying to configure courier 0.35.1 with virtual users and smtp auth. basically, the configuration seems running. i was able to relay using smtp auth login. now, i tried to switch to smtp auth cram-md5, but this won't work at all. i've tried with 2 different mail-clients and all i find in the log-file is: courieresmtpd: error,relay=::ffff:195.230.42.130,msg="535 Authentication failed.",cmd: AUTH CRAM-MD5 as soon as i enable smtp auth login, everything works fine.

where can i start to look for the problem?

For starters, determine whether you meet the requirement for CRAM-MD5 authentication: you must use cleartext passwords.
