Effectively, you just said that maildrop is not suitable as mail delivery agent.
The MTA relies on its MDA to communicate trouble back, waiting for the queue entry to expire just does not cut it.
Only a broken MTA does that. Properly designed MTAs do not accept mail for delivery to nonexistent mailboxes in the first place, and the MDA never sees invalid recipients. In the example port 25 log I posted the mail server immediately rejected a nonexistent recipient, without consulting the MDA. That's how it should be. --
As written multiple times before, SMTP is not the only interface to the MTA. What MTAs "sendmail" commands exit with EX_NOUSER when there is no user? Hint: qmail's and Postfix's sendmail wrappers don't. (Not that I'd expect qmail to have ANY clues.)
