Arg, you are right. I knew that the moment I read your message :)

Unfortunately, same problem: $ sudo su mail sh-2.05b$ maildrop -d te@kallisti.net.nz maildrop: Invalid user specified.

te@kallisti.net.nz mail=/var/spool/virtualmail/te@kallisti.net.nz| uid=8|gid=8|home=/var/mail

and I know it's valid this time: $ sudo userdb -show te@kallisti.net.nz mail=/var/spool/virtualmail/te@kallisti.net.nz uid=8 gid=8 home=/var/mail

(the home dir changed, just because I was testing something different)
