The /var/log/maillog says nothing, it only shows the pop3 connection from 2 minutes ago. I also tried the telnet approach and it does not want to accept a message from te@mydomain.com to te@mydomain.com. It says that mydomain.com doesn't exist? but when I type mydomain.com in it accepts it just fine.

another small question. Does smtp from a pop3 client and from a mailserver on the other site of the world get handled the same way by the local mail server?

ok that's fixed. but now it just says "An unknown error has occurred"

When and where do you get this message? Can you post some of the /var/log/maillog, it should have some more information, as well.. Did you print and read the install file? I know it sounds stupid but courier is very low level controlled.. There isn't a easy interface for it but it is a great mail server.

If you are getting into the mail server admin world take some time to learn how to connect to the mail server and test using telnet. If you look under google for "smtp telnet" you should see some instructions This will let you rule out the client if you still have problems.
