Under http://www.courier-mta.org/mbox-vs-maildir I am curious about the sentence (under DELETE.1/Phase I):

Courier-IMAP doesn't need to do much I/O here. It only needs to rename and then delete a single file from the maildir.

Why is a rename necessary? I looked through the Maildir specifications but there's no mention of deletion.
