Is you sound device occupied by another program, e.g. by the KDE or GNOME sound server (artsd or esound)?

Try adding some virtual channels (e.g. "sysctl hw.snd.pcm0.vchans=2").

I hope I'm not butting in here, but what exactly does that do? Does that allow more than one program to use the sound device? If so, could that also be enabled in /boot/device.hints?
