Courier-IMAP currently does not support searching text in a non-english character set.

You mean Courier-IMAP's searching will ignore all messages in non-english character set? I guess not, because

A10 search subject <B64 encoded word of "test">

hits messages of which subject looks like "test <smth Japanese>", but

A10 search subject test

does not hit those.

Is this the problem of searching character set?

There is a test server available with an experimental i18n character set searching and sorting capability:

I`m trying this version.
