No problem. For the record, I too have recreated this problem with no other gadgets on a tab - well just one gadget anyhow. I was about to capture that too but then it started working again. That should give you an indication of just how intermittent the problem is. Will try to capture it again and also get complete output of the http conversation via Fiddler if I possibly can.

That's awesome Bonstio. Thanks for capturing it.

One reason why it's so hard to debug is because it's hard reproducing it *consistently*. Have any of you noticed it occurring more with certain gadgets?

Bonstio/Matt, can you reproduce (and capture) the error on a brand new tab with no other gadgets installed? We need to isolate this problem. If you've already done this, let me know and reply back with a link to the gadget. Reason I ask is because Bonstio's viewlet shows there's a few gadgets installed, including the developer gadget and your custom skins gadget.

In general, I'm having a really hard time reproducing it on my workstation, but I believe you guys that there's a hidden bug somewhere.

Thanks for helping us track this down,

Dann

HA! I have caught it! It was causing me real problems today so I thought I'd test out Viewlet Builder. Excuse the watermark - this is still the free version of course.

Have a look at this
urlhttp://bonstio.net/settings_problem/problems_viewlet_swf.html

Here I have recorded myself making two unsuccessful attempts to add a couple of gadgets to the homepage. Then I continue to edit a gadget setting and save it. When the page reloads, the setting is still blank.

It's not perfect as the mouse movements don't seem to line up but you'll get the idea. All the while there were NO javascript errors reported by Firebug. This is exactly what I've been trying to describe over the course of this thread.. and I believe it's what Matt has also witnessed. It's totally intermittent. I'm going to try and "get rid of" the problem. This usually involves emptying my cache, restarting my browser, trying a few more times... wait for an hour or so...

What do you think people?

....and one more thing. I have seen this problem (well I presume it's the same problem) manifest itself in other ways - cannot add any gadgets from the Google gadget directory. - cannot delete gadgets - cannot switch tabs - cannot delete tabs

Same here - all of which seem to be part of the same "user state" that preferences are stored in.

I wish I was out there in CA - I'd stop by the Google office and offer to debug it myself because it's so damn irritating ;)
