Quote from the documentation (http://www.mysql.com/documentation/mysql/commented/manual.php?section=Insta lling_binary)

8. Create the MySQL grant tables (necessary only if you haven't installed MySQL before): shell> scripts/mysql_install_db

Note that MySQL versions older than Version 3.22.10 started the MySQL server when you run mysql_install_db. This is no longer true!

Just a thought, do you have the default database installed?

what do you mean by "default" dabased installed? I installed mysql (the tarballs) with "pkg_add" utility.

First off, put an & at the end of safe_mysqld to send it into the background: ./safe_mysqld --user=mysql &

done, still quitting...

Secondly, make sure the directory /var/db/mysql exists and the user mysql has read and write access to it.

yes, owns to mysql user.

Let me know if that all checks out.

It keep quitting...
