Thank you. The component axis toggle was the culprit. The axis markers are now gone.
On the other point you brought up, DWG is short for "drawing". And yes, I use the term block instead of group or component. This huge model was entirely generated within SU from scratch soley by myself. There is no ACAD input. In fact I work in SU now instead of ACAD, because in my very first 2 hours I did a more complex model in SU than I could do in a week with ACAD, and except for accuracy and lack of a 2D CAD drawing, SU does more, faster and way easier than ACAD. Since I do mostly conceptual models, accuracy is not critical, although not being able to generate a 2D printout is a major minus.

jgb,
Are you sure you are posting in the right forum? :-)
With SU you are working with skp files, not DWG's. Imported dwg's become groups that you can explode. To understand each other it's better to use SU terminology. SU does not work with blocks but groups and components.
I suspect that you work with different templates, maybe even put together by other persons. That explains the (un-)visibility of local axes. You can turn them off through: Window > Model Info > Components > Component Axes: uncheck 'Show com. axes'
On the same 'Model Info' location you can controle the visibility of the rest of your model when editing a component or group.
You seem to experience different settings in different skp-files that you are working with.
Hope this helps. Wo3Dan

I have several drawings of various complexity. A few act very differently from the norm. On 1 dwg, I cannot get rid of the Block Axis marker (RGB lines) on all the blocks, yet they do not show on any other dwg. The block axis' are all normal to the prime axis. This is very annoying, especially viewing the model at a distance, as all I see are axis lines.
On some dwgs, when I edit a block, everything else on the dwg goes
invisible. But on a few dwgs when I edit a block, any visible layer
goes to a very light brown as a reference, which is handy in some
instances. It would be nice to control this, but I cannot see how.- Hide quoted
