Right. There could be other things too.

i've been having similar issues, so any advice on tracking this down would be appreciated. (namely what other obvious/semi-obvious things could be going on)

i get a lag time when telnetting into the smtp server sometimes.

In my (limited) experience, this behavior has almost always been due to a misconfigured (or non-existent) nameserver on a local network, causing reverse DNS lookups to fail.

Once, though, I had to delete all of the libnss_nis* files from glibc before the shadow-password 'login' would allow console logins w/o a 60-second delay. I still haven't understood that one.
